Excavations have shown that an
early oratory stood on the site of the church. As it now stands, the
oldest parts - the piscina and N chancel window - are E.E. (Early
English, 13th century. Not shown). The rest is Perp. Low W tower
of granite ashlar with type B buttresses (i.e. set back
from the angle of the building) and big crocketed pinnacles. S
side also of ashlar.

S
arcade of three bays, the piers of A type (i.e.
hollows in the diagonals between the four shafts) with two-centred, simply moulded
arches. ... N aisle (second picture) and
vestry 1889-90 by S. Hooper of Hatherleigh; the old windows were re-used,
and a granite arcade added in sympathy with the S aisle. At the same time
the walls were scraped. ... Bench ends. Sixty-nine, variously carved with
saints, prophets, etc., in animal and plant surrounds; accomplished work
of 1923-6 by Herbert Read. ... Screen. 1904, designed by Bligh Bond and
carved by the Pinwells.
First and last picture: A squint in the chancel wall gives a view of
the altar from south aisle, and a staircase leads to the top of the
screen. |
